Yoav Weiss makes a good point: “WebMCP is Agentic WebPerf”.
I’ve seen both pushback to WebMCP in the form of “websites should just be better, or agents should be smarter, there shouldn’t be alternative paths to using them built.” And I’ve seen plenty of excitement for WebMCP in the form of “ooooo AI droolface”.
But it’s not really an alternative way to use a website, it’s exposing what a website can do in a programmatic way that allows agents to understand it right away instead of burning tokens to figure it out from scratch every time.
WebMCP enables the site to provide agents with direct JS tools they can call to accomplish tasks, and as a result, makes direct interaction significantly faster, better and cheaper. That circumvents the slowness/awkwardness of an AI agent trying to figure out how to interact with the site as if it’s a human.
